Smart Pups Assistance Dogs was founded in 2011 by Patricia McAlister, who brought over 30 years of dog training and behavioural expertise to the role. Based on the Sunshine Coast, the charity breeds, raises and trains assistance dogs individually matched to children living with autism, epilepsy, diabetes, mobility conditions and other complex medical or developmental needs. Every dog is guided by the same purpose, captured in the charity’s tagline: changing lives, one paw at a time.

Each dog undergoes a 12-18 month training journey covering early socialisation, public access, obedience, enrichment and advanced task work before being matched to a child based on temperament, lifestyle, environment and clinical needs. Trained tasks range from tracking a child who has wandered and interrupting escalating behaviours to alerting to seizure or diabetic episodes, supporting mobility and building confidence in school and community settings.

Smart Pups has placed more than 360 dogs with families across Australia and currently supports around 30 families on the waitlist, working towards matching and placing each dog within about eighteen months of joining. Breeding, raising, training and placing one dog costs approximately $50,000, with Smart Pups funding roughly half through community support and recipient families fundraising the remainder, a shared investment that underpins every placement.

Smart Pups was among the first organisations in Australia to advocate for children under 18 to have their own assistance dog with an approved alternative handler, contributing to legislative change in 2015. That advocacy, paired with an in-house breeding program of up to 50 dogs at any one time and around 20 placements each year, reflects a charity that leads on both the ground and the policy front, and continues to grow its reach through community partnerships and local support.
